Poble-sec square

This Barcelona neighbourhood is located at the foot of Montjuic mountain between Plaça Espanya and the Port of Barcelona.
Avinguda del Paral·lel is the main road which separates Poble Sec from the neighbouring districts of Raval and Eixample.
Poble Sec was first built up at the beginning of the 20th century outside of the second city wall of Barcelona in an agricultural area.
During the Civil War it was heavily bombarded as it was considered to be a strategic location. The Power Station with its three tall chimneys, which are still standing today, welcomes visitors arriving from the port.
The International Trade Fair "Fira de Barcelona", one of the most important international trade fairs, can be found at the opposite end of the district.
The Theatre Complex "Ciutat del Teatre" is another important institution to found in the district where professional actors and dancers are trained.
The facilities on Montjuic Mountain have been the scene of significant international events such as the Universal Exhibition of 1929 and the Olympic Games of 1992.
There are many museums nearby including the Miró Foundation, the National Art Museum of Catalunya, the Ethnological Museum and the Military Museum in Montjuic Castle.
